Mask leaks are one of the most common frustrations for new CPAP users. Even small leaks can wake you up, reduce therapy effectiveness, and make adjusting to CPAP much harder than it needs to be.
The good news? Most leaks come from simple issues that are easy to fix. This guide walks you through the most common causes — and how to stop CPAP mask leaks for good.
Why CPAP Masks Leak
Leaks usually happen for a few predictable reasons:
- Pillow pressure pushing against the mask
- Straps too tight or too loose
- Dirty or oily mask cushions
- Mask size not matching your face shape
- Mouth opening during sleep (for nasal masks)
- Old or worn-out cushions
Once you understand the cause, the fix becomes easy. Let’s go step by step.
1. Wash Your Mask Cushion Daily
Skin oils prevent your mask from sealing properly. Cleaning the cushion each morning dramatically improves seal quality.
Daily wipes + weekly deep cleaning is the gold standard for leak-free therapy.
2. Try a Mask Liner for a Better Seal
Mask liners help reduce leaks by creating a soft barrier between your skin and the cushion. Great for people with sensitive skin or frequent leaks.
They also help prevent cushion slipping during the night.
3. Loosen Your Headgear (Most Beginners Overtighten!)
This is the #1 beginner mistake. Tightening the mask increases leaks because it collapses the cushion.
Instead:
- Lay down in sleep position
- Turn on the CPAP machine
- Adjust top straps first, bottom straps second
The cushion should “inflate” gently around your nose or mouth.
4. Use a CPAP Pillow for Side-Sleeping
If you sleep on your side, your normal pillow may push the mask out of place. A CPAP pillow has cut-outs that prevent pressure on the mask.
